Using actual prompts from the common and coalition applications as well as supplementary essays, students will learn strategies for generating ideas and writing original, memorable, engaging essays that reflect the broad spectrum of who they are as a student and, more importantly, as a whole person who will live and contribute to a college campus. The week will be focused on generating student writing on a variety of topics and at a variety of lengths. What kind of an essay works best when you have 650 possible words? What happens when you only have an allotment of 150? Can the same essay work for various prompts? As the Personal Essay Start-Up offers a means of generating essays, it works well as a complement to the College Essay Workshops offered later in the summer at no cost to students through the Marist Counseling Department, in which completed drafts of essays receive feedback from students, an English teacher, and a college counselor. Come find out how to express the varied and amazing person you are! Personal Essay Start-Up Camp is led by Dr. Shannon Hipp of the Marist English Department.

The Personal Essay Start-Up is a weeklong writing intensive in which rising seniors will learn strategies for writing engaging essays that can be used for college applications, supplements, and scholarship applications.
